January was a busy month for CAS at Brown. The year started with presentations for all 3 grades.
6th grade: To celebrate Martin Luther King, CAS provided a special performance by a group of talented artists who through drama, stories and song, told the story of Dr. King’s role in the civil rights movement.
7th and 8th grade: Author Gary Schmidt, winner of both the Newbery Honor and the Printz Honor, spoke to students about his philosophy about writing. He encouraged students to write about what they want to know rather than what they already do. The presentation was followed by an hour-long writing workshop and a Q & A.
8th grade: 8th graders also heard from Steve Kidd, a writer and actor who performed his one-man show, Sigh/Omelas, in which he effortlessly morphs from one character to another. His story is based on his real experience of working with children born with HIV/AIDS.
